Destron microchips are powered and their identification codes are read by radio frequency signals generated from microchip scanning devices. Microchip scanners generate a magnetic field that is intercepted by the microchip. The microchip uses the energy from this field to power itself and transmit a return signal to the microchip scanner which converts it into the microchip's identification code. The resulting alpha-numeric identification code is displayed on an LCD display or can be relayed via computer interface to other equipment. Depending upon the application, the identification number can be linked with data about the micro- chipped animal or simply verify the identity of the animal.

A small keypad, switchboard, or button provide the user with control over the microchip scanner's operating options. The printed circuit boards (PCB) in Destron Fearing ISO microchip scanners are produced in an ISO 9001 controlled environment.

All 134 kHz microchip scanners are programmable to read any microchips conforming to ISO standards.

Portable microchip scanners are battery operated and easily hand-carried. The portable microchip scanners manufactured by Destron are all based on similar electrical designs and differ principally with respect to the hardware and software options offered and packaging design.

The Destron hand held "Pocket" type microchip scanners were designed specifically for use with companion animals in animal shelters or veterinary clinics. Both microchip scanners have a one function button for unprecedented ease of operation. The ergonomic design makes them easy-to-use and convenient. The battery powered, radio frequency microchip scanners incorporate many innovative features for reading and identifying electronic microchips including SMART˘ technology, automatic channel searching and RF Surround˘. Pocket Reader EXThe Pocket Reader EX˘ microchip scanner was created to provide animal shelters and clinics in the United States with a reader that could consistently read microchips from various manufacturers. The Pocket Reader EX had the best overall results in a comprehensive, industry-wide field test conducted by the American Humane Association to evaluate the performance of universal microchip scanners.

  • SMART: (Standard Memory And Re-Programmable Technology) The microchip scanners incorporate an integrated circuit which allows them to be re-programmed. Through the use of SMART software, the microchip scanners have the flexibility to read current and future microchip technologies in 13 different languages.   • Battery powered: The microchip scanners operate on four universally available AAA or AA alkaline batteries.
  • Automatic shut off: The microchip scanners are programmed to automatically shut off when the power level of the batteries is not sufficient enough to read chips.

The Pocket Reader EX microchip scanners incorporate all the standard Pocket Reader features with the following additions:
  • Larger antenna size: The antenna has a larger surface area designed to give greater read range, surface area coverage and speed.
Note: An AC-DC power adapter is available as an optional extra for the EX model reader only. It allows this reader to plug into a standard 240v power outlet for continuous use. This power unit has a product code of Techer - 57 Power Pack.
